The Odyssey

The Odyssey will progress the quality of cinema for years to come. The bar has just been lifted astronomically.

Nolan didn't set out to perfect the formula. Instead he created a new one completely and had me lost in the journey of Odysseus and his men.

On paper, this should never be a summer blockbuster as it doesnt align with the constraints of others. The path can feel obscured and the pacing can feel unnatural, yet all of these choices work to its credit, refusing to fall in line and creates a whole new cinematic journey – one that is so deserving of a story like The Odyssey.

You dont just watch the journey unfold, you endure it. Every life spent and every sacrifice made, takes you one step closer to the conclusion of this film; Nolans work at its absolute highest level.

My true highlights however, came from the scenes so ambitious, it would turn away other filmmaker but instead of brushing over those obstacles, he made sure to leave me scarred with imagery that provoked a pure, visceral reaction. The first of which came in the form of Polyphemus. One five-second shot that will stay with me for a lifetime.

Even now as I sit at home, I see it clear as day.

Hopefully the creative nature of this feature will inspire filmmakers to think outside the box and make real movies again. Cinema isn't dying; it was just missing The Odyssey.
