Dune: Part 3 Preview
The opening minutes of Dune: Part Three suggest this trilogy has yet to reach its peak.
Before 70MM IMAX screenings of The Odyssey, fans around the world were treated to a sneak preview of the opening five minutes of Dune: Part 3, the epic conclusion to Denis Villeneuve’s acclaimed Sci-fi trilogy. The clip appeared to be the opening scene and has already been described by many as “Saving Private Ryan esque”. A high adrenaline, explosion of rage and war, featuring established characters and unfamiliar surroundings.
Right from the opening frame, the clip establishes that Part 3 will have a unique feel to it. Everything from the colour palette to the atmosphere has a much rawer and malicious tone which perfectly complements the evolution of Paul’s character. Without his inclusion, this scene already speaks volumes about the world we’re re-entering and how things have shifted since we were last here. The previous film’s opening features some of the most beautiful shots in modern cinema, using its vibrant colours and sharp silhouettes to highlight the stunning scenery of Arrakis. Here however, dark shades and colours wash over the imagery, much more reminiscent of the Harkonnen’s, foreshadowing the fate of our characters.
The preview, however, looks to achieve much more than just building anticipation for the film, it creates a desire for it to be watched in the grandest cinemas around the world. Whilst only giving us a small sample, it displays precise yet thunderous sound design and reserving it for 70MM IMAX screenings only improves the experience. IMAX is no longer an optional format; it’s a premium event that exposes you to all the elements of filmmaking.
I found the clip to be strangely infectious. My mind has been plagued by the mystery of what happens next and any film-related conversation I have, weirdly finds a way back to Dune: Part 3. After getting the opportunity to see this at the BFI, I feel it’s my responsibility to share the news; A new, all-timer Sci-Fi movie is on the way this Christmas.
